 Introduction to Aadhaar authentication

Aadhaar authentication refers to a process that involves verification of Aadhaar details.  The Central Identities Data Repository (CIDR) is responsible for validating Aadhaar details based on the demographic and biometric information submitted.  The support nt authentication process is designed to provide a platform that enables quick and easy verification.

 How does base authentication help?

When an official is required to create a proof of identity (POI) for any official application, they submit a variety of POIs ranging from passport to PAN card, driving license, passport and voter identity card.  Given that identities are issued by different governing bodies, it is difficult to validate each type of document accurately.  But, through demographic certification, support eliminates the need for offline flight verification.  By following some simple steps, officials get the benefit of running cheline checks for biometrics as well as demographic checks that are not only accurate but also reliable.

 Why is Aadhaar authentication required?

There are many public and private organizations / agencies that provide subsidies, benefits and services to customers, affiliates and employees.  Agencies need a nt authentication process that is easy, quick and reliable to perform their tasks.  The availability of different types of identification documents makes it difficult for agencies to validate each type of document with accuracy.  With the introduction of Aadhaar authentication, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) expects to provide a more reliable method of identifying documents submitted by individuals.  The information collected after a person's biometric verification and demographic authentication is being stored on a centralized platform authorized by UIDAI.

 Support authentication methods

When performing authentication, the following types of information are used to verify individuals:

Demographic Honesty - When applying for Aadhaar, we provide basic personal details such as name, date of birth, address and gender etc. These types of details are classified as demographic details.  When CIDR verifies base details against demographic information, it is called demographic authentication.  It involves the process of checking basic personal details that are already in archives, as opposed to information provided by an individual to authorized agencies.

Biometric Authentication - When the biometric details taken during the support verification match the scan provided, it is called biometric authentication.  There are two types of biometric verification procedures:

Multi Factor Authentication - UIDAI also provides a combination of authentication processes.  An agency may choose to run multiple authentication methods based on requirements.  This is known as multi-factor authentication.

OTP based Aadhaar authentication - There is also an additional option to verify individuals based on OTP sent to their Aadhaar registered mobile number.  The person will need to provide the Aadhaar number along with the OTP to confirm the identity.

What are the benefits of Aadhaar authentication?

The base includes demographic as well as biometric information which enables it to provide a high level of security authentication process.  The process has many advantages over traditional offline fly verification methods.  Some of the benefits are listed below:

Functions as a PoA - Aadhaar and e-Aadhaar are accepted as a legal PoA document.  Individuals can prepare support for various types of applications such as opening a new bank account, applying for a passport, getting LPG connection with / without subsidy etc.

Identifying Beneficiaries - Using Aadhaar Aut authentication services, the service provider may perform a quick authentication check to ensure that the targeted beneficiary is entitled to benefits and services.

Transactions and Payments - Aadhaar will help authenticate financial transactions through various Unified Payment Interface (UPI) based mobile applications.  Recently, the government launched the BHIM application which uses the Aadhaar authentication process to validate transactions and payments between individuals and merchants.

The government is still exploring areas where the Aadhaar authentication process can be implemented.  Given the wide range of advanced multi-factor authentication features, secure methods, speed and reliability, the base is definitely the best method for person-specific identification.
